Had a friend pass onto me an Amplifi Ubiquiti Alien Router as he was having issues with very weak wifi signal, we had tried factory resets, downgrading firmware versions etc.
Reading online there are a few reports of the Amplifi Ubiquiti Alien Router with very poor wifi signal problems and seems to be a common issue, so I thought I would have a look quick look inside and see what was going on.
The Amplifi Ubiquiti Alien Router uses the Qualcomm IPQ8074 and is a smart looking router.
After lifting the lid on the Amplifi Ubiquiti Alien Router (full details of breakdown in next post) I noticed there was a 4-pin PWM CPU fan type and I quickly removed the fan for testing purposes.

Firstly I checked the 4 pin PCB board connector to ensure power was being received (GND pin and VCC pin) and also tested the fan directly with a 9v battery and as I had thought the fan was not working.
I also noted, whilst taking out the fan, the fan sits directly above the Qualcomm IPQ8074 CPU.
I can only assume that once the fan had failed, over time the PCB board slowly cooked itself and hence very poor wifi.
