So I read this the other day and it does look as though Apple plans to enable 5G in dual SIM mode with a software update later this year
iPhone XS models and newer models have both a physical SIM slot and a digital eSIM. This enables a feature called dual SIM, dual standby. This means you can have two lines of service on one iPhone. This is useful for buying data-only plans when traveling abroad or having personal and business lines on a single iPhone.
According to an internal training document for Apple employees shared on Reddit, 5G is not available in dual SIM mode at launch on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. MacRumors can confirm that the document is authentic.
However, according to an internal Verizon slide from MacRumors, Apple plans to enable 5G support in dual SIM mode with a software update later this year. Meanwhile, according to Verizon, eSIM customers will need to remove the physical SIM card from their iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro in order to access the 5G network.
5G is automatically enabled on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models provided users have selected a supported wireless carrier that offers a 5G network. In order to be able to access 5G when roaming in other countries, according to the Apple document, customers can purchase a local SIM card or an eSIM tariff and, if available, use them as a single line with 5G.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro began last Friday, and deliveries will arrive at customers next Friday. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available for pre-order starting Friday, November 6th.
