Australia to Ban Under‑16s from YouTube and Major Social Platforms

In a bold move to protect children online, Australia is set to ban users under the age of 16 from creating accounts on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and X (formerly Twitter). The new law takes effect in December 2025, giving tech companies one year to comply.

Originally exempt, YouTube has now been added to the ban following new guidance from the nation’s eSafety Commissioner. While kids will still be able to watch YouTube videos without signing in, they won’t be able to create accounts or access personalized features. YouTube Kids will remain accessible for younger viewers.

I can’t say I disagree. Social media is weapons grade brain rot, specifically targeted at making the adult brain hooked. This is orders of magnitude more effective on young kids. The damage has been plain to see … i’d welcome such an introduction here.
