Google is rolling out a major policy shift that could reshape how Android apps are installed and distributed. Starting in September 2026, developers will be required to verify their identity before their apps—whether on the Play Store or sideloaded—can be installed on certified Android devices. By 2027, this requirement will extend globally.
What Is Sideloading?
Sideloading allows users to install apps from outside the Play Store, typically by downloading APK files directly from websites or alternative app stores. It’s long been a hallmark of Android’s open ecosystem—but that freedom is about to face new limits.
Why the Change?
Google says the move is aimed at improving security and trust:
- Reduce malware: Verified developers make it harder for malicious actors to distribute harmful apps.
- Prevent impersonation: Users can be confident that sideloaded apps come from legitimate sources.
- No content review: Google won’t inspect app functionality—only the developer’s identity.
In a completely sane world, madness is the only freedom (J.G.Ballard).
