Interestingly, Starting 13 August 2025 in the U.S., YouTube will roll out an AI-based system to estimate viewers’ ages via viewing behavior and account activity. This is intended to help ensure minors under 18 only see age-appropriate content and safety feature.

    What’s Happening & When

    • Beginning August 13, 2025, YouTube will begin deploying an AI age-estimation system in the U.S. that assesses viewing behavior, account age, and activity signals to infer whether a user is under 18 — regardless of what birthday was entered during account setup

    • The rollout starts with a small pilot group of U.S. users, with broader expansion planned after monitoring the system’s performance.

YouTube’s new AI will identify underage users to protect minors

    Why Is YouTube Doing This?

The move comes as part of broader efforts to protect children online. Regulatory bodies in the U.S., UK, and EU have increasingly pressured tech giants to do more to prevent minors from being exposed to:

    • Mature or explicit content

    • Inappropriate ads

    • Comment sections that could pose risks

YouTube is already enforcing age verification in Europe, and this AI system is the next step in global enforcement.

    How Will It Work?

    Once deployed, the system will:

    • Automatically estimate the user’s likely age

    • Restrict access to videos, ads, or features not suitable for that age group

    • Disable certain features like comments, live chat, or ad personalization where necessary

This means content creators may see changes in how their videos perform with younger audiences—and viewers might notice restrictions if the system thinks they’re underage.
