How to Block Ports on an Older Netgear Router

Blocking ports on your Netgear router can help enhance your network security or manage specific connections. Follow these steps to configure your router:

Step 1: Access the Router’s Interface
    1. Open a web browser and type 192.168.0.1 or www.routerlogin.net into the address bar.
    2. Log in using your administrator credentials. If you haven’t changed them, the default username is admin and the password is password.
Step 2: Navigate to the Firewall Settings
    1. Once logged in, locate the Security or Advanced Settings section in your router menu.
    2. Click on Firewall Rules (this might also be called Content Filtering on older models).
Step 3: Create a Custom Rule for the Port
    1. If the port you need to block is not listed under predefined rules, create a Custom Service.
    2. Provide a name for the service (e.g., “BlockedPort123”).
    3. Specify the port or range of ports to block. You’ll also need to select the protocol (TCP, UDP, or Both).
Step 4: Set the Rule Action
    1. After creating the rule, choose the action Block Always (or set a schedule if needed).
    Step 5: Save and Apply
    1. Click Apply or Save to activate the rule.
    2. Restart your router if required, ensuring the changes take effect.
    Additional Tips
    • Test the blocked ports to ensure the rule is working as intended.
    • Be cautious about blocking ports critical to the router’s or devices’ operations.
