Microsoft has rolled out its first major Windows update since Satya Nadella publicly promised to “win back fans,” and it’s clear the company is trying to rebuild trust. The update focuses heavily on stability, performance, and removing some of the friction that’s frustrated users for years. From smoother File Explorer behaviour to fewer intrusive AI elements, this release feels less like a feature dump and more like a course correction—one aimed squarely at people who’ve been saying Windows lost its way.
The “win back fans” line comes from a growing recognition inside Microsoft that Windows has faced mounting criticism:
- Performance and reliability issues in Windows 11, especially File Explorer instability
- User frustration with forced or intrusive AI features, including Copilot entry points
- Complaints about bloatware and preinstalled apps
- A sense that Microsoft was prioritising new features over core quality
Nadella’s vow is essentially an admission that the company needs to refocus on fundamentals. This update is the first tangible sign of that shift: fewer gimmicks, more polish, and a renewed emphasis on making Windows feel fast, stable, and respectful of user preferences.
