I am having difficulty changing my router’s ip address to a class b address i.e. 172.18.x.x, this being both more secure (less likely to guess) and legitimate as it falls between 172.16 . . and 172.32. . It appears to accept it, but when I attempt to log in again it is impossible. Do any of you savants out there know whether it is possible to change from a 192.168.x.x. address to an a or b class?
    Device ASUS DSL-AC88U.

Welcome, the DSL-AC88U was dropped mid term by ASUS from a firmware perspective so lots of outstanding issues.

    try.

Out of interest, I just changed my DSL-AX82U LAN IP Address to 172.18.0.1 and rebooted and the configuration was saved.

    try also:

UK Sentinel, Thank you very much for your efforts.

I am very embarassed (can’t find a red faced emoji), I discovered my error last night and I’m almost too ashamed to confess it. As above,I changed the address, but couldn’t log in. Like an idiot, I was trying to do so with my laptop still using 192.168.1.1 as the gateway. Changed it to the 172. address and Eureka.

I can only apologise and thank you again for your efforts on my behalf

    Best regards

What do you think could be more secure useing a different subnet range?

Private IPs are not reachable outside your network either, so it just makes absolutely no difference which one you take, 192.168, 172.16-31 and 10.x.x.x are equally secure.

Of course you can use larger subnets than /24 if needed, but there is no other aspect to may be considered!

Your public IP will always be NATted to whatever your private subnet uses.

Grisu, Thank you for your input. Your point is well made.

Just to put things in context: I am retired (73) and purely to keep my mind active, I was following a course on Linkedin which touched on network security. It pointed out that among the basic steps to securing private networks one could change the ip address of the private LAN. I think that the idea was simply to frustrate amateur hackers on the LAN side who would use the address printed on the base of most routers as a starting point for any attack. So I thought that I would give it a whirl.

My level of expertise is betrayed by the elementary error that I made. I apologise again.

If someone can enter your network on LAN he will automatically get an IP from DHCP of your modem and so he will know the subnet as well.
This really makes no sense, not to me nor to others working with networks.

That is why most users (>>99%) will use what modem sets by default.
Some operators like mine for example use 10.0.0.x (but only reason for that because for business customers they need larger subnets).

Grisu, Thank you for your clarification. Glad that I only tinkered at home.

Hope that I haven’t caused any offence with my rather stupid question. I’ll spend longer trying to unravel these mysteries before pressing fingers on the keyboard next time. (or give up)

No offence as we are all here to learn or pass on our experience and views etc.
