Around 5,000 electric vehicles in the UK are affected by a Volkswagen Group battery safety campaign, involving selected Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID. Buzz and Cupra Born models manufactured between 2022 and 2025.
The issue relates to potentially defective high-voltage battery components which could overheat when charged above 80%, creating a potential fire risk. Affected vehicles are having their maximum charging capacity restricted to 80%, in most cases through a remote software update.
Owners will be contacted by Volkswagen or Cupra and may be required to book an inspection at an authorised retailer. Depending on the findings, battery modules may need replacing, with all necessary work carried out free of charge.
For owners, the temporary charging restriction could mean a noticeable reduction in driving range, particularly on longer journeys. Volkswagen and Cupra say the original charging capacity and range will be restored once the necessary safety work has been completed.

One important point: Not every ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID. Buzz or Cupra Born is affected. The recall applies to selected vehicles, so owners should check using their registration or VIN rather than assuming their model is included.
