    Hi all,

What’s a good VPN service to use?

I have heard of NordVPN but I believe they got hacked a year or so ago so not too sure about them, but they have a relatively cheap offer on atm, 2 year deal.

Express VPN is meant to be very good, albeit not as fast a NordVPN but still reasonably but the cost is a bit steep so just wondered if anyone here used one or what they would suggest?

Both of the above claim to store no info on what you do i.e. no storage of websites you visit etc

    Thanks

    Kev

Is this for PC and are you looking for a free option or paid ?

Other key area to consider is usage (Mb) and VPN Server locations/destinations, VPN Kill Switch and maybe IPv6 support and of course the  VPN’s logging policy if that is of concern to yourself. ?

Is this VPN for OS or Windows ?

From a brief look, it seems to get no logging etc, paid is the way to go.  I didn’t see any mention of usage limits on nordvpn or expressvpn but maybe others have it? Not sure on usage as i have no way to really tell what i use lol.

VPN Kill switch it seems most have this now, I’d prefer to have no logging.

Plan would be for Windows OS initially but I believe most VPN providers now provide for Windows, apple, mobiles etc.

    Thanks

I use Proton VPN as it is free (registration required) and has access to three locations, for streaming etc. seems to work well and supports no session usage logs.

When I do use the VPN, it is only for around an 90 mins or so, so stability etc. over longer periods on the free service could be a concern.

As you say, others like NordVPN work well as well as ExpressVPN and have servers all over the world

Take a look at below reviews:

I did forget to mention, some of the free VPN’s services can collect logs etc, I have read reports that some Chinese VPN services are prone to this, so always best to check where VPN companies HQ / Owner are located

    Agree, thanks.

What do you think of NordVPN? I believe they were hacked in 2021? Apparently made some “improvements” etc since but unsure whether to trust them or not going forward.  The deal is very tempting but just not sure they could be trusted as if hacked once, could happen again? It was reported due to I think some 3rd party leaving some management open so 1 server for hacked BUT apparently no data was compromised but lead to review of processes and some being changed, altered etc so makes you wonder how many other things were not suitable etc?

    Thanks

NordVPN is a good VPN service and usually (my thoughts) if a system gets compromised once, the system including Policies, Standards and procedures improve as a result.

Generally, NordVPN’s is well liked and very popular, only minor comment I have seen online is that in UK, maybe issues with DNS sometimes so need to use NordVPN’s DNS servers.

But one to consider strongly !

Thanks, tricky one – one one hand NordVPN is cheaper but concerned over security of it and I am aware some utubers who used to back them and recommend have since puled there recommendations etc so didn’t bow well.

ExpresVPN seems good, good reviews but higher cost, bit of a dilemma as don’t really want to pay the high price tag.

Deal I can find at the mo are:-

Express VPN have a deal atm – 12 months + 3 months free for £5.43 per month, total price is $99.95 (£81.38) for the 15 months then $99.95 every 12 months

Nord VPN has a deal on also –

2 year plan: £3.39 per month + 3 extra months = £91.53 for first 2 years, then £82.68 per year

1 year plan: £3.79 per month + 3 extra months = £56.85 for first year, then £82.68 per year

20 month plan: £3.79 per month = £75.80 for the first 20 months, then £82.68 per year

1 month plan: £10.98 per month billed every month

So on face of it Nord 2 year deal is cheapest but the yearly price is virtually no difference with express VPN being slightly cheaper

Still a bit pricey to pay out each year for a VPN tbh.  2 year deal isn’t bad on Nord as that’s around £46 per year so not too bad.

£10 or anything near that sounds expensive for a private VPN (for non commercial usage) in my view.

2 year deal isn’t bad on Nord as that’s around £46 per year so not too bad.

the 2 year NordVPN deal for £46 sounds a fair deal

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, just need to look into the hacking/security side of it more as not too sure about it

Security is always a tricky subject.

I did read NordVPN does not have had phone support and that some servers do not support torrenting.

But on a positive, given NordVPN head office location and avoids Five Eyes and other Eyes Alliances agreements and has a zero logging policy I beleive.

Yes i saw but but where the HQ is based they could be forced by gov to provide info, which supposedly they don’t have but suspect they would need to change policy then.

ExpresVPN in Panama i think so doesn’t fall under any requirement or any eyes alliances etc at all so can’t be forced at all but again they store no info.

Still deciding atm, tbh I’m rob only gonna use it for maybe an hour or so here and there.

    NordVPN head office is Panama

ExpressVPN head office is British Virgin Islands

Either way, let us know which way you go and how good the VPN service is
