OpenWrt is a great opensource firmware project and I currently have a Netgear R7800 running OpenWrt at a friends house with a separate modem.

Generally, Broadcom based routers are well supported with OpenWrt if that helps, really depends what you can get hold of in your part of the world ?

Netgear and ASUS models are well supported and the Netgear R7000 router only, not ONT is a well supported model for OpenWrt and offers  good value
