Welcome, the DSL-AC88U is a modem router combo, ASUSWRT-Merlin is for Routers (RT) only.

I have flash/hacked the DSL-AC68U with ASUSWRT-Merlin suitable for the RT-AC68U. as they use they use the same wifi chipset etc. but alas the DSL-AC88U does not use the same wifi chipsets as any other RT router model

I would if possible return the DSL-AC88U and purchase a separate modem and router set
