Apple’s new M5 chip, built on third-generation 3nm architecture, is setting a new benchmark for on-device AI. With a 40% boost in neural engine performance and major gains in energy efficiency, it’s designed to handle complex tasks locally—enhancing privacy, responsiveness, and battery life.

But the race doesn’t stop at 3nm.

TSMC and Samsung are preparing 2nm chips for commercial release in 2025–2026, using nanosheet and Gate-All-Around transistor designs. These promise even greater performance and density, pushing mobile and desktop hardware into new territory.

Meanwhile, researchers are experimenting with sub-1nm technologies, manipulating atomic structures to explore the limits of silicon. While not yet viable for mass production, these breakthroughs hint at a future where quantum effects and exotic materials like graphene reshape chip design.
