I thought I would share this as a warning to others buying high-capacity MicroSD cards and thank goodness for such quality free tools from Gibson ResearchÂ
A while ago, I purchased what were supposedly SanDisk 512GB High Endurance MicroSD cards. I recently dug one out to use with my Reolink TrackMix 4K PTZ camera. Before setting it up for 24/7 recording, I decided to format the MicroSD card via my laptop.
At first, everything looked normal. Windows File Explorer detected the card as 548GB, which seemed correct, I then quick formatted the MicroSD drive and that worked as expected, it was only when I went to perform a Full format that my suspicions were aroused and hence using the Gibson ValiDrive tool.
Gibsons ValiDrive showed a very different result:
——
Declared drive size:
547,608,330,240 bytes (548GB)
Validated drive size:
4,096 bytes (4.10KB)
Highest valid region:
4,096 bytes (4.10KB)
Vendor:
Realsil
Product:
rtsuerlun0
Serial:
0000
——
So although Windows reported a 548GB card, ValiDrive could only confirm 4KB of usable storage.
A genuine 512GB microSD card should have hundreds of gigabytes available, so this card is either counterfeit or seriously faulty.
Formatting will not fix this issue, as formatting cannot create storage that does not physically exist.
This is why it is so important to test high-capacity cards before relying on them for CCTV, dashcams or other important recordings. A camera may appear to record, but the footage could be missing or corrupted when you need it.
Card tested: SanDisk High Endurance 512GB microSD (claimed)
Windows detected: 548GB
ValiDrive result: Only 4.10KB validatedGibson Validrive Tool

Before first usage I always tested them in the past with the free testing tool H2testw.
