Hi we have recently upgraded the BT package from 500mbps to the full fibre 900. When using Lan speeds they are fine however over Wi-Fi it doesn’t go above 650 mbps. I have the three Wi-Fi bands separate and have enabled 160mhz on the 5ghz-2 that the Apple devices connect to and we only have 1 XT8.
I have tried the MacBook pro and iPhone 14 next to the the ASUS but the speeds max out the same. I’ve checked the MTU and it’s 1492 which matches when doing tests and am using the latest Merlin firmware Version : 388.1-gnuton1 with a clean install.
Any suggestions or tweaks to improve the Wi-Fi speeds ?
Thanks

May 23, 2023 at 11:15 am #24629Welcome to this thread, Is QoS enabled, if so try disabling just for testing purposes ?

May 23, 2023 at 12:47 pm #24630Hi I’ve been an avid follower of the forum and QOS had been disabled since it was first set up. I’ve tired different bands on 5ghz but hasn’t made much of a difference.
I’ve had the router for a while and am familiar with the interface but I’m puzzled over this one as was expecting faster speeds as the MacBook pro is syncing at 1,200 on channel 116.

May 23, 2023 at 1:07 pm #24632Glad you decided to join, Wifi is always interesting and usually problems are hardware related, I assume if you can set 160mhz on the 5ghz-1 channel the results are the same ?
@Dodgydrains, have you notice any wifi throughput speed issues with your XT8’sIn a completely sane world, madness is the only freedom (J.G.Ballard).

I don’t think you can enable 160mhz on 5ghz-1 only the second one.
No sure if others have experienced similar issues with FTTP as it was fine and could attain 520mbps on the previous BT package but can’t manage to get above 650 ish

May 23, 2023 at 4:52 pm #24656You have about 40% overhead over WiFi, so what faster would you asume with max-link apeed 1200Mb/s?

May 23, 2023 at 6:22 pm #24658Now that I have checked, @stevenroberts is correct I think in that the XT8 does not support 160mhz on 5ghz-1 hence the lower transfer rate.
For 5ghz-2 loads of wifi bandwidth available (in theory) if ASUS smart connect is disabled ?
The ASUS ZenWifi XT8 supports the following wireless data rates,
802.11a : up to 54 Mbps
802.11b : up to 11 Mbps
802.11g : up to 54 Mbps
WiFi 4 (802.11n) : up to 300 Mbps
WiFi 5 (802.11ac) (1024QAM) : up to 4333 Mbps
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) (2.4GHz) : up to 574 Mbps
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) (5GHz-1) : up to 1201 Mbps
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) (5GHz-2) : up to 4804 MbpsIn a completely sane world, madness is the only freedom (J.G.Ballard).

May 23, 2023 at 6:43 pm #24660Yes I was hoping for a little more than 600 ish but can’t tell if there’s a setting that could tweak and improve the speed. Ive downloaded the latest Asus firmware and it’s not made any difference.
Contemplating calling BT to downgrade back to the 500 as not much better on wifi tbh.

May 23, 2023 at 7:16 pm #24663The max speed over WiFi I have received on my S23 Ultra is around 650-700mbps. There is always some loss/overhead over WiFi, and yes 80MHz is the max on 5GHZ-1. 160MHz is reserved for the 5GHZ-2.
From what I understand, if you use wired backhaul you may be able to use 5GHz-2 for WiFi. I have not tried this at all.

May 23, 2023 at 7:28 pm #24665Thanks..
We only have 1 XT8 and use the 5GHZ-2 for mainly high speed devices like the MacBook pro, iPhone etc. I have uploaded the settings for the 5GHZ-2. :)

May 23, 2023 at 7:37 pm #24668Settings look good !
Is the Mac Book Pro 2020 or newer and what iPhone series is it as just checking what wifi speeds these devices support ?

May 23, 2023 at 8:13 pm #24669May 23, 2023 at 8:33 pm #24670iPhone 14 pro seems to reach around 650 – 700 Mbps typically taken from Reddit etc. Alas iPhone 14 does not support WiFi 6E or 160MHz I believe.
Either way, I will drop ASUS a message just to see if they can advise on best options for wifi and see what they advise.

Can you try setting 160MHz rather than 20/40/80/160MHz? That way you will know for certain if your device can/is connecting to 160MHz.
