Thanks.. We only have 1 XT8 and use the 5GHZ-2 for mainly high speed devices like the MacBook pro, iPhone etc. I have uploaded the settings for the 5GHZ-2. :)

Can you try setting 160MHz rather than 20/40/80/160MHz? That way you will know for certain if your device can/is connecting to 160MHz.

tried it and non of apple products can see the 5GHZ-2 when only on 160mhz I’ve got it set to just 80mhz on the 5GHZ-2 channel.

So had a chat with ASUS regarding settings for your 5GHZ-2 channel and general ASUS Wifi stuff.

Much like what @Grisu has said, ASUS also confirmed max throughput could be about 60%~70% of the link rate and they have tested this morning with a ‘Tx rate is 1170M’ and achieved an actual download speed is 700 ~ 800Mbps.

Screen shot of ASUS settings for 5GHZ-2 Wifi Speed Testing

Note: ASUS did also comment that if Smart Connect is used, then it is important to check STA Selection Policy is working on Wi-Fi 6 (AX) etc.

Interesting, when you next have time, can you go to the Wireless Log and check what value the ‘Tx rate’ and ‘BW’ is for the device in question (MacBook) currently.

    ‘Tx rate’ = Link Rate

    ‘BW’Β  =Β  Channel bandwidth

Thats really interesting and appreciate you contacting ASUS! Do the settings look the same, do they have a copy of the Wireless – Professional settings for 5GHZ-2 to compare as I’ve noticed a debate on the universal beaming settings and the different OFDMA/802.11ax MU-MIMO settings affecting TX speeds

I have changed from the merlin to the latest ASUS version 3.0.0.4.388_23285-g5068da5 and noticed a slight increase in throughput but still about 600mbps when running several speed tests. The TX is consistent at 1,200

    Thanks

No problem and hopefully this will help others also.

I have asked ASUS for copy of Wireless Professional settings page .

Take a look at below link, may help with understanding wifi speeds,Β  MacBooks and real world hardware limitations etc.

Below is screen capture of ASUS Wifi 5GHZ-2 professional wifi settings they used for testing only.

ASUS said regarding OFDMA andΒ  MU-MIMO does not improve the max throughput of single device for testing, but owner could enable them if most of their wireless devices support them.

    Thanks for this :)

I am starting to wonder if the ASUS has an issue as I’ve got on AX 160GHZ on 5GHZ-2. Β I have got another works laptop, surface 4 and its has a Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz with the latest driver its is only syncing at 1201.

I could be wrong but understand that it should be 2400 with AX 160 MHz enabled on the XT8 I can’t see what other setting I can turn on?

    Thanks

sorry wont let me uploads pic as its says its too large managed it as a png file :)

Can you log into router via browser and Screen capture the Wireless log, this will show us all connections and data rates etc.

I have done some investigation and if you switch it to 160mhz only instead of 20/40/80/160 my surface 4 then shows 2400/2400 so it allows dual band. Previously even with 20/40/80/160 selected its wont double up its has to be only 160mhz only.

I have done a speed test and its gets nearly 900mbps on wifi so problem solved. just a shame not many wireless cards inc apple MacBook Pro are 160mhz enabled.

useful to know for anyone else having similar problems on the FTTP 900 and didn’t notice this at all when on the 500/75 package.

Glad you are all sorted and yes, 160Mhz is not the go to channel width due to interference etc. 80Mhz is the preferred.

BTW: I was just looking at the below specs from Apple to check which models support 2400 Maximum PHY data rate , as you say only very new Macbook pro’s actually support wifi 6 @160Mhz for 2400 Maximum PHY data rate.

    AX@5GHz is supported upto 1200 Mbps @80Mhz.

I was pretty sure that your issue was that devices were conneting via 80MHz when you had it set up as 20/40/80/160.Β  Baffling how modern PC/mobile devices are still not 160MHz compliant.

Yes a lot of fiddling with the settings. I have set the 5GHZ-2 at 160mhz only on channel 100 as we only have one XT8. Interestingly, the MacBook can see the 160 MHz but only offers single band speed. it’s the same with the iPhone 14 and iPad. the speeds are more stable with about 700mbps the surface 4 that can use 160mhz with a tx of 2.4gbps shows a speed test of 920 mbps over wifi.

Hopefully the next iPhone and iPad will fully support 160MHz.Β  Those speeds you are getting are really good though.

That is interesting in that only single band is available, but glad we got there in the end
