The Allegation
- After installing Windows 11 update KB5063878 (Build 26100.4946), some users—mostly in Japan—reported that their SSDs:
- Disappeared from File Explorer and BIOS.
- Showed up as “RAW” partitions.
- Triggered I/O errors and system crashes during large game updates like Cyberpunk 2077
The Theory
- Â The bug only appeared under very specific conditions:
- SSD more than 60% full.
- Continuous write of 50GB+ (e.g., game patching).
- Possibly triggered by certain controller firmware—but not limited to Phison
Microsoft’s Statement
“After thorough investigation, Microsoft has found no connection between the August 2025 Windows security update and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media”.

August 31, 2025 at 8:29 am #39384Even I had this the last days!
SSD wasnt seen by bios, so couldnt load bootloader.
I had to switch off power, afterwards I could see it in bios again and change boot partition to my SSD to start windows again.I dont game, but SSD is quite full.

August 31, 2025 at 9:32 am #39385Does seem like you maybe also caught by this.
Your SSD controller may be hitting a firmware deadlock during high I/O or background cleanup. Windows 11’s latest update seems to exacerbate this by:
- Changing how write queues are flushed.
- Possibly skipping certain TRIM or flush commands.
- Overloading the SSD’s internal buffer, especially if it’s already juggling wear-leveling.
All theory but the drive does disappear from BIOS, good to see you found a workaround in your case.
