GNUtons build for the DSL-AX82U is a cross between ASUS DSL firmware combined with that of a developer RMerlin for the Router side (functionality)
The firmware can be flashed directly to the DSL-AX82U via the UI and no factory reset is required, but is advisable.
GNUton (RMerlin) firmware builds offer several advantages, but are more suited for the more technically minded, if the standard ASUS firmware seems to offer all you need, then no point upgrading.
I use ASUSWRT-Merlin on my RT-AC86U and have tried GNUton on my DSL-AX82U and worked well. (work in progress)
