Alas as the DSL-AC88U uses the Broadcom BCM63138Â for its main CPU, there is no ASUSWRT or ASUSWRT-Merlin suitable alternative for this model.
Also, @GNUton produces ASUSWRT-Merlin fork for ASUS DSL modem / router units (DSL-AC68U DSL-AX82U) etc. but not for the DSL-AC88U.
The DSL-AC88U does have a WAN port, so can act as a Router only, but firmware is far from stable.
Even though there is a DD-WRT for the RT-AC88U, the Processor, Wifi and Ethernet Chip are different to that of the DSL-AC88U, so no real joy as far as I am aware.
