As far as I am aware, ASUS never got round to fully finishing the DSL-AC88U for a WAN port connection to a separate modem.
adjusting QOS may help, what qos if any are you using ?

November 10, 2021 at 6:31 pm #16152I’m not an expert but I didn’t think this router had many options for QoS. I did try it but turned it back off

November 10, 2021 at 6:36 pm #16153I’m surprised it’s working at all as router, when I had it I couldn’t get it working as router connected to separate modem.

Alas If QoS is Off and you are still having issues, then unfortunately the DSL-AC88U needs to be replaced, especially if you are a gamer

November 10, 2021 at 7:06 pm #16156There’s 1 thing I want to check although it doesn’t explain the high cpu. But so far In terms of gaming this week, I haven’t had any ping spikes. I want to see if when another computer starts a video call if it affects my PC gaming.
With virgin the upload is 10mbs less.

High CPU is probable due to WAN port running bad (unfinished) code, hence excessive CPU usage .
Edit: Your  original shell ISP connection was using DSL-AC88U inbuilt Modem and Router
Your New Virgin connection is only using the DSL-AC88U as Router, hence higher CPU usage due to WAN port problems probable ?

November 11, 2021 at 8:56 am #16165I think this could be the case. I do have an old n56u.
I could try plugging that in and see if the CPU goes high

the N56U is liked taking a step back in terms of wifi, but good for a test ?

November 12, 2021 at 3:22 pm #16173I tried setting the n56u up. I put automatic wan IP on the quick setup but I’m getting no connection. Am I doing something wrong?

March 13, 2022 at 7:44 pm #18254March 13, 2022 at 7:54 pm #18255Alas as the DSL-AC88U uses the Broadcom BCM63138Â for its main CPU, there is no ASUSWRT or ASUSWRT-Merlin suitable alternative for this model.
Also, @GNUton produces ASUSWRT-Merlin fork for ASUS DSL modem / router units (DSL-AC68U DSL-AX82U) etc. but not for the DSL-AC88U.
The DSL-AC88U does have a WAN port, so can act as a Router only, but firmware is far from stable.
Even though there is a DD-WRT for the RT-AC88U, the Processor, Wifi and Ethernet Chip are different to that of the DSL-AC88U, so no real joy as far as I am aware.
