These are the commands / guidance I received from ASUS regarding your .CFE file

Use dd command to backup CFE.
The input file is /dev/mtd0
The output file could be USB disk, e.g. /mnt/<disk name>/<backup file name>
dd if=/dev/mtd0 of=/mnt/DISK/cfe.bin bs=1k count=512
To restore CFE, exchange input file and output file.
