As another idea @David23 – you can get your number moved to a VOIP service which can be independent of your ISP.  I signed up to what was then a free VOIP account which I effectively use as payasugo.  I add some money to the account and then I should get a notification when the account goes below a certain amount as a reminder to top it up again.  I can set it to auto top up but considering I’ve had it over a year and I’ve not reached the lower level yet, indicates how little I use it but just a nice to have in case of mobile signal issues.  To keep the account live, I have to make a call/text etc every 2 or 3 months so not a major issue.  You can even get a app (for some VOIP providers) that you can set the account up on your mobile and when you receive a call, you can answer it via the app on your mobile so again can get the call wherever you are.  My service just requires a small box to be wired to a standard LAN port on my router and a power socket, that’s it. One small issue for me is the power in my area often goes out during strong winds etc and then my phone doesn’t come back up, I have to go in and change port numbers for some odd reason so I simply change them, then change them back and its all up and running.  I’ve tried various options to make it auto come up including turning both box and router off, turn router on first make sure internet up then turn other box on – no change… very odd, but I’ve learned to live with it.  Now I know the fix, its a 1 min job, just annoying.

My parents have the same box and as there power virtually never goes out, the phone works fine all the time.  Last time the power went out was when there was a major power issue affecting a large part of England a few years back.

Unfortunately, most VOIP servers now are pay x a month, but last I checked they are still cheaper than the BT line rental for the year so might be worth considering.  Only down side is, if internet goes down, you have no phone.  Not ideal but I guess they assume internet wont go down much?

I switched to FTTP just over 1.5 years ago now as the cost to switch to FTTP was not much more about £1-2 a month so I figured I’d switch to get the faster speed for the money I’m paying.  As you say, probably due to them wanted you to switch to FTTP.

@UK_Sentinel – Only plus side from moving from BT to PlusNet is no engineer needs to come to your house.
