I noticed that YouFibre was building in my area soon so I decided to see what my termination charge with BT would be. I did this because YouFibre have a buy out your existing contract thing.
Bear in mind that I have approx 18 months left (I signed in March 2023). I went on live chat that pops up (Can I help you?) and selected Leaving BT as the option. I asked the person what my charge would be.
The charge to leave and get a different supplier is under ยฃ30… I have no idea why. Even the BT staff had no idea why.
Maybe something to try for others that have a long time to go. Maybe you will get a nice surprise. By the time you take up the cashback offer from your next supplier you might even be in profit lol.

September 5, 2023 at 7:11 am #26749That is most interesting, was you current BT Broadband Fibre also ?
I tried to leave BT (FTTC) when they increased all their prices in April, but was told I had to wait until the end of the year or pay a small fortune.
I will be logging onto BT today and trying again to leave

September 5, 2023 at 10:32 am #26751Who you planning to go to, out of curiosity?
We recently left BT and they charged us ยฃ8 and it was onlyย a few days left on the contract as it ran out early Sept and we switched end of Aug so only a few days, wasn’t expecting them to charge as we had given them notice at beginning of Aug (via provider we switched to) so was hoping of 0 charge due to it only being few days but appears not.

September 5, 2023 at 10:44 am #26752Well I have around 3 months left on my contract and BT want ยฃ37.15 to cancel contract early, considering I am paying nearly ยฃ42 a month, glad to leave.
BT did offer the same service at around ยฃ29 I beleive, but both Plusnet and Virgin are in the mid ยฃ20’s
Will look more on offers later this week, but would love to have the Virgin media speeds, but there installs can leave a lot to be desired as we are in a cul-de-sac etc.
I have set the cancel date with BT, so have a few days to find an alternative

September 5, 2023 at 11:55 am #26755Yes I am with BT Broadband Fibre also (FTTC). I have a sneaking suspicion it’s so cheap because I am in an area with BT FTTP but still on FTTC. They either want me signed up or to go elsewhere.
I don’t know who I will go with. I’m in a situation where I can’t abandon my landline number so it limits the choices.
BT have been awful lately in terms of greed. 6 months ago you got Diital Voice included in the price plus 2 handsets. Now they want you to pay ยฃ2 extra for Digital Voice a month and ยฃ34 for the handsets.

September 5, 2023 at 4:09 pm #26761We ditched our Landline number a couple of years ago, now we just use mobiles and skype etc.

September 5, 2023 at 5:51 pm #26762My landline holds stuff for some accounts that are such a hassle to update.
I did ask around and I have a solution. If I order FTTP data only with another ISP like Aquiss, once it’s live I can put a landline number porting request with andrew and arnold that will get my landline number on voip. Then I don’t have to bother about it in the future. Also slightly cheaper for a couple years.
I’m also looking at Vodafone though. They have an all in one hub for broadband and digital voice that can also port my number.

September 5, 2023 at 6:09 pm #26764As another idea @David23 – you can get your number moved to a VOIP service which can be independent of your ISP.ย I signed up to what was then a free VOIP account which I effectively use as payasugo.ย I add some money to the account and then I should get a notification when the account goes below a certain amount as a reminder to top it up again.ย I can set it to auto top up but considering I’ve had it over a year and I’ve not reached the lower level yet, indicates how little I use it but just a nice to have in case of mobile signal issues.ย To keep the account live, I have to make a call/text etc every 2 or 3 months so not a major issue.ย You can even get a app (for some VOIP providers) that you can set the account up on your mobile and when you receive a call, you can answer it via the app on your mobile so again can get the call wherever you are.ย My service just requires a small box to be wired to a standard LAN port on my router and a power socket, that’s it. One small issue for me is the power in my area often goes out during strong winds etc and then my phone doesn’t come back up, I have to go in and change port numbers for some odd reason so I simply change them, then change them back and its all up and running.ย I’ve tried various options to make it auto come up including turning both box and router off, turn router on first make sure internet up then turn other box on – no change… very odd, but I’ve learned to live with it.ย Now I know the fix, its a 1 min job, just annoying.
My parents have the same box and as there power virtually never goes out, the phone works fine all the time.ย Last time the power went out was when there was a major power issue affecting a large part of England a few years back.
Unfortunately, most VOIP servers now are pay x a month, but last I checked they are still cheaper than the BT line rental for the year so might be worth considering.ย Only down side is, if internet goes down, you have no phone.ย Not ideal but I guess they assume internet wont go down much?
I switched to FTTP just over 1.5 years ago now as the cost to switch to FTTP was not much more about ยฃ1-2 a month so I figured I’d switch to get the faster speed for the money I’m paying.ย As you say, probably due to them wanted you to switch to FTTP.
@UK_Sentinel – Only plus side from moving from BT to PlusNet is no engineer needs to come to your house.

September 5, 2023 at 6:16 pm #26765Totally agree with @kev2021 – if number needs to be kept, a VOIP service will be the best option.
I have set up Virgin media for one of my offspring for their student accommodation, so far it has worked well, but install and wiring was not to my liking.
Tough choices it is, but they ‘Virgin Media’ are great value and British

September 5, 2023 at 9:10 pm #26767Your provider doesn’t happen to be sipgate does it kev? Shame I missed out on that when it was free.
Is there anybody else to consider other than andrew and arnold now?

September 8, 2023 at 10:50 am #26797Another thing you can try to get out penalty free is say you’re moving to Hull where BT (and other ISPs/telcos) don’t operate as KCom have the monopoly.
It’s worked in the past. Sometimes they ask for proof of new address, sometimes they don’t. worth a go.

September 8, 2023 at 7:20 pm #26805@UK Sentinel Is there a topic to discuss future ISP choices?
Maybe something like “What ISP should you pick (Megatahread)” and people post current offers etc or opinions.

Yes, was fortunately to get in before they changed it.ย Only issue i have is went internet/power goes out, the “VOIP hub” for want of a better word doesn’t re-register, I have to basically change the port numbers and it then registers all fine, then i change them back and it registers all fine.ย Very odd, I’ve opened firewall rules etc, doesn’t seem to make a difference.ย I’ve even tried turning both VOIP hub & router off, turn router on and make sure internet up and running then turn on VoIP hub but no change.ย Been considering a change of VOIP phone & make but not sure its worth the cost.
Bit annoying as in my place the power goes out whenever there is strong winds etc so typically every 3 months or so, parents one is fine as power never goes out so its on and works fine constantly. Only had to do there’s when changing ISP.
