Technically it could work, but they are registred with their ID (not only MAC) and so your own ONT oder modem won’t work.
This is a good point, whether the substituted ONT from provider needs the individual ID / Encryption etc.
I will have a look online over the weekend and see if this is the case for fibre based connections in Germany, if I get time.
