As far as I am aware they are both plunged in the switch but via a patch panel would this make a difference or could it be just the length of the connection?

Unless the length is over 100metres, then unlikely to be length of cable, ‘patch panel you have’, indeed have a proper network at home.

Alas you may need to simplify your set-up. and only a thought, maybe try to changing your AiMesh node to an AP instead and see if that works as an alternative via you patch panel and switch etc. ?

Edit: also make sur the switches DHCP service is Off as you maybe picking up stray IP addresses ?
