Big news for Xbox fans and portable gaming enthusiasts: Microsoft is making a serious move into the handheld gaming space with a new device codenamed Project Kennan.
Originally leaked in early March by Windows Central, Project Kennan is being developed in partnership with ASUS, the same brand behind the ROG Ally handheld. This upcoming device will offer Xbox-branded hardware and is rumored to run a full version of Windows, making it compatible with Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and the Microsoft Store.
Two Versions Leaked:
Certification filings in Indonesia and the U.S. FCC reveal two variants: a standard ASUS model and a black version featuring an Xbox logo buttonโclearly aimed at the Xbox market.
Power Under the Hood:
The Xbox model is expected to run on an 8-core AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU, while the standard edition may use a 4-core AMD Aerith Plus chip. Both will sport a 7-inch, 120Hz LCD display, improved ergonomics, and modern connectivity options.
OS and Software Support:
This device is not just a traditional consoleโitโs a hybrid. Running full Windows, users will have access to a massive ecosystem of PC games and Xbox services, including xCloud streaming.
An official reveal is rumored to take place around May 20, 2025, potentially during Microsoft Build or Computex. While this version will run on Windows, reports suggest that Microsoft is also developing a true Xbox-native handheld for launch in 2027.
With Nintendo set to release the Switch 2 this June and Valve continuing to dominate with the Steam Deck, Microsoft’s entrance signals a major shift in the handheld market. Whether you’re a PC gamer or an Xbox loyalist, this device could reshape portable gaming.
