Is the Asus rt-ax86u/s EOL? doesn’t seem too long ago (2021) I bought is, was expecting it to be supported for a bit longer tbh, especially considering the cost, not overly cheap. Will there still be updates? or effetely no support now and no new firmware etc?

The ASUS Rt-AX86U/S is not on the ASUS EoL listing and they (ASUS) are usually good with firmware support for 5 years at least

ASUS and many others are required by UK law to provide updates for a minimal of 4 years.

Just had a look and Version 3.0.0.4.388_24243 was released in 2024/05/13 so fairly recent this is.

Thanks, i read a comment on a different forum saying was old and eol so thought I’d check here as spec of the router is reasonable so should cope with updates etc.

Yes saw that one but not applied yet, opinions seem ok so considering updating to it at the moment.

That’s over a year old, lots of new Security fixes in Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388_24243

yeah, i did read someone had issues with iot devices (smart plugs) not connecting but there was no update on it so not sure if unique to there setup or not so been waiting to see.

I still get all those errors etc in log of it dropped, reconnecting stuff but I gave up trying to solve it as was never ending…..

New one may fix but not seen anything specific pointing to fixes for it.

You can take a backup of current config, then update and see how that goes, then if not happy go back to 3.0.0.4.388_23285 and reload backed up config after a factory reset.

Thanks, I’ve never downgraded the firmware so just need to get familiar with the process.  I downloaded the utilities etc a while back.

Just did the update, fingers crossed all ok – will have to wait and see if remains ok for next few days.

Still errors in log as before so no change there it seems :(

Looks like the RT-AX86U is now Eol of Life (EoL)

 

Note; ASUS I believe must keep issuing security updates for EoL routers in the UK until 31 December 2026, because PSTI law requires manufacturers to maintain security support for the full declared period.

Dam, thought I had another year before it reached EOL :( Interestingly the RT-AX86S isn’t showing on the list? which ironically is the lower spec’d version?

Any issues running router into 2027 or should I really change it to something else?

Not too sure on replacement basically want something that has same options as RT-AX86U but with WIFI 6/7 support ideally.  Looked at the RT-BE96U – didn’t look bad, different design to the RT-AX86U but had VPN and other options so looked possible, unless I saw the price – over £500! considering I need to buy 2 – that’s a bit steep, although the RT-AX86S id likely leave a while as I don’t have nothing running when not come, only IoT devices like thermostat etc so very little info obtained if it was to be accessed some how. Nas boxed, pc etc turned off.
