Asus ROG Rapture GT-BE19000AI launches as world’s first AI-powered gaming router with built-in NPU

The ROG Rapture GT-BE19000AI at CES led the announcement as a high-performance gaming router with a first-of-its-kind built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

The ROG Rapture GT-BE19000AI is aimed at gamers and power users who demand low-latency, high-speed internet with enhanced security and management features.

The NPU is said to help enhance local processing speeds, reduce latency, and improve overall energy efficiency.

I find it funny that this is their ‘first AI powered router’ and yet for years they’ve been advertising their routers with all of their features named AI-this and AI-that

    Creative Marketing ….

A few years ago in the IT sector it was all about the ‘Cloud’.

Now ASUS are pushing AI, along with the likes of Google, Bing etc.

Not a fair comparison, but you know what I mean.

ASUS Ai Router consists of the main following components, as far as I can tell.

    •  Tri-core processing architecture consisting of a CPU, NPU, and MCU
      • CPU – A central processing unit (CPU), also called a central processor, main processor, or just processor, is the most important processor in a given computer/device.
      • NPU – An ASUS Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is an AI-focused chip that’s designed to handle AI tasks
It’s built with layers of interconnected artificial nerve cells that mimic the human brain to process and transmit information
      • MCU – The Microcontroller Unit (MCU) is a separate chip from the BIOS, that governs the native game controller, Aura RGB, and other hardware-level features.

Looks like the NPU is the new and interesting option which works alongside the CPU,  I will drop ASUS a message and see what I can extract from their technical dept..

So had had a chat with ASUS and the Neural Processing Unit is a standalone chipset within the ROG Rapture GT-BE19000AI.

What is an NPU? (my generic interpretation and not router specific)

NPU stands for neural processing unit. It’s a special kind of processor that’s optimized for machine learning tasks.

NPU processes large amounts of data in parallel, performing trillions of operations per second. It uses less power and is far more efficient at AI tasks than a CPU or GPU. It excels at AI tasks and frees up the CPU and GPU for other tasks. Combining an NPU with machine learning gives you a powerful combo.

NPU performance is measured in TOPS, which stands for trillion operations per second.

Machine learning algorithms form the backbone of AI specific applications, these algorithms learn from data patterns, making predictions and decisions without explicit programming.
