A guide as to the types of Factory resets options that seem to work with the ASUS routers/modem (RT/DSL)c ombo’s.

    1. A Soft Reset consist of going to Advanced Settings > Administration > Restore/Save/Upload Settings tab and select Factory Default button
    2. Or, On the back of ASUS routers is a small hidden reset button, with router on, push in button for 10 seconds (ish) until router reboots and you should then be able to reconfigure router from the beginning.
    3. and, Disconnect DSL lead and all ethernet cables and all wifi devices apart from the device being used to perform the update. Powercycle unit until fully rebooted (2 mins, but wait 5 mins to be safe). Hold in rear factory reset button with a pen/toothpick/etc for at least 5 seconds and wait until fully rebooted. Log in with admin/admin at http://192.168.1.1/login.htm and click on firmware version at the top. Click choose file button, select unzipped firmware file, select upload button, and wait until updated and fully rebooted. Hold in rear factory reset button with a pen/toothpick/etc for at least 5 seconds and wait until fully rebooted. Reconnect DSL lead. Wait until DSL sync LED changes from off to blinking to solid. Go to http://192.168.1.1/ and proceed through Quick Internet Setup.

Last option is last resort and some say also helps if you flash same firmware file onto router twice, just to ensure old firmware is removed.

Always remember, if you are having issues and decided to factory reset router, then usually best to configure routers from scratch and not load from a backup.cfg file, as these can sometimes cause more problems than they resolve, especially when your are restoring from different firmware versions.
