So our (daughters) beloved Fiat 500 sprung upon us over the weekend another surprise.

The brake pedal went soft and leaked brake fluid all over our driveway, upon investigation it seemed the front right (drivers) side brake hose decided to fail at the rubber ferrule. (Red arrow below).

Closer look at front brake hose ferrule break, Red arrow points to spring retention plate that needs to be removed later in the sequence .

So I Purchased 2x Fiat 500 front brake hoses form EuroCarParts (ECP) for £20 each and some new DOT 4 brake fluid. (replaced both sides I did).

New Fiat 500 front brake hose unwrapped.

I firstly cleaned all joints and bleed nipple with a wire brush and then soaked the joints with WD40.

Then with a set of mole grips (locking pliers) I clamped the brake hose about an inch from the end of the hose and with a knife I cut just below where the mole grips clamped on the brake hose.

The mole grips stop break fluid leaking and cutting the brake hose allows easier removal of brake hose from brake caliper.

Then with an 11mm Flare Nut Wrench and a 17mm normal spanner, the brake hose was separated from the main brake line and the spring retention plate was also removed. (tricky this part was)

Adding the new Fiat 500 front brake hose was just a reversal of the above sequence and then brake caliper needed bleeding.

Note: I did have to remove the brake caliper as the main brake line nut was stuck in position, the only way to attach new brake hose to the caliper after the other end was tightened was to remove brake caliper and rotate to attach.

Picture below of Fiat 500 with new Front brake hose fitted.

    Fiat 500 front brake hose spanner nut sizes for reference;

Red Arrow    = 11mm Flare Nut Wrench

    Green Arrow = 17mm

Yellow Arrow = 14mm Flare Nut Wrench

    White Arrow = 8mm

Below picture of the damaged Fiat 500 front brake hose rubber ferrule, seems to be a common issue on older Fiat 500 models on the drivers side.

Note: I replaced both Divers side and Passenger side front brake hoses as a matter of caution.

Picture I forgot to add earlier,

A handy trick to stop the brake fluid reservoir draining whilst you are working on the brake pipes is to slightly depress the brake pedal (1″ to 2″) and hold in place, this then creates a vacuum in the master cylinder that stops brake fluid draining from the disassembled brake pipe and hose components.

Safer than clamping as this can damage brake pipe walls etc.

(car had a good clean after I finished)
