A massive global recall has been issued affecting approximately 2.86 million Volkswagen and Audi vehicles worldwide.
According to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), prolonged exposure to environmental factors—specifically road salt can cause a critical bolt securing the steering gear to corrode and break over time. In worst-case scenarios, this component failure could lead to a complete loss of steering control, creating a severe accident hazard.
Fortunately, the KBA reports that there have been no documented injuries or property damage linked to the defect so far.

The recall spans a decade of production and includes some of the group’s most popular models:

- Audi Q3: Units manufactured between 31 October 2017 and 23 May 2024.
- Volkswagen Tiguan, Touran, Golf, Golf Variant, and Caddy: Units manufactured between 24 September 2013 and 1 July 2024.
In total, the campaign impacts roughly 2.16 million Volkswagen models and over 696,000 Audi models globally.

Technicians will inspect the steering assembly and replace the vulnerable hardware with a highly corrosion-resistant bolt. The repair typically takes up to one hour to complete.
