I recently picked up a hAP ax² to play around with, learn RouterOS and use as a backup, and maybe a travel router.

    It is a surprisingly small, 120 x 101 x 37 mm device, with 5xgigabit ports, WiFi 6/WPA 3, IPsec hardware encryption, a quad-core ARM 64 processor, 128 MB NAND and 1 GB RAM. Retail $99 USD ($134 CAD)

Out of the box it’s running RouterOS 7.6, updated to 7.8

With default configuration, it speed tests on ethernet around 948×107 Mbps, and on WiFi6, around 887×89 Mbps, on my 1100/110 Mbps ISP connection.

The plan is to move it behind my main router (Asus XT8) for now, remove the default configuration and learn to configure it from scratch.

First impressions, a pretty impressive device, especially considering its small size and cost.

Nice and such a great price, the hAP ax³ wireless specs looks promising also , Powerful radio + external antenna gain

And ax³ got 2,5Gb port with passive PoE in/out and one 1Gb passive PoE out port. Together with USB3.0 and wide range power input 12-28V too.
Good to know: Passive PoE is not specified and may damage ohter devices!

This process started with a search for a high powered wired router, which lead me to MikroTik and their RB5009UPr+S+IN which looks amazing. Cooler heads prevailed though and I decided to pick up a cheaper device to play around with.

I went back and forth between the hAP ax² and hAP ax³ and probably would have bought the hAP ax³ as a main device, but I’m still feeling like an RB5009 or successor is my end goal, so I settled on the hAP ax² as a good learn to use RouterOS device and potential backup/travel router, due to its modern specs and very small size.

Great entry level device is the hAP ax² and is a great introduction into the world of RouterOS
