So the recent storms have damaged around 10 of our garden fence post (100mm x 100mm) and looking to replace with suitable wooden posts (not metal or concrete).
Always been a Wickes fan but their Incised Timber Fence Post 100 x 100 x 2.4m is around £24 a post where as Buildbase equivalent is just under £20 a post
Wickes offer free delivery on orders over £75 and it appears Buildbase delivery is also inclusive on a simular large order.
Anybody know if either Wickes or Buildbase Incised posts are better, straighter etc, or are they all roughly the same quality nowadays ?

March 12, 2022 at 4:47 pm #18227March 12, 2022 at 6:41 pm #18235Yes, both Wickes and Buildbase Fence posts i am looking at are Pressure treated to ensure durability and prevent rot and both are Incised fence posts which are engineered to provide a greater preservative treatment.
Also both come with a 15 year guarantee so I am still curious as to why Wickes are more expensive than Buildbase ?

March 12, 2022 at 6:43 pm #18236I suppose I will have to go to both Wickes and Buildbase next week to have a look at there post and see which seem straighter and heavier etc, as I believe for these types of wooden posts, heavier is better ?

March 12, 2022 at 9:47 pm #18238I would of thought so. My place, has concrete posts and fence panels between the posts. I have to say, absolute rubbish. Soon as we get any strongish wind (not just in recent storms) they blow out. Back fence is a proper all wooden fence and that been fine but the sides, they put concrete posts and panels, prob due to easier to do and maybe cheaper. Only plus is concrete boards at bottom so helps stop bottom of fence rotting.

March 13, 2022 at 8:10 am #18247Cost and ease of install sounds like the why you might have concrete posts and wooden panels, but if they panles keep blowing out, a real pain and physical security concern maybe ?
Of to Wickes and Buildbase I go this week.

March 13, 2022 at 3:07 pm #18249yes is a pain. Fortunately its back garden and I have neighbours either side so not like I’m on the end of a street with public walking past with blown fence. So not too bad, just of an annoyance having to keep putting back and concern they will break and cost to keep replacing but atm it cheaper to leave as is and try make changes so they don’t blow out..
Getting neighbour to agree to fence being replaced could be a nightmare as he wont want his nice garden messed up with workmen removing & fitting new fence etc…

March 17, 2022 at 4:25 pm #18282So visited our Local Wickes and Buildbase today and have decided to opt for the Wickes wooden fence posts, they seemed to be made more uniform, less knots and chunks missing out of the edges and finish was smoother (uniform) which is good if posts not only need to be strong, but look good also.
Both Wickes and Buildbase fence post felt the same weight but the Buildbase incised only seemed to be intermittent on posts and not on all four surfaces, on some of the posts I looked at .

March 17, 2022 at 8:17 pm #18287Are they pressure treated? they don’t look like it in the pics :(
tbh its hard to find decent timber these days, most of it isn’t much good, not like it used to be :(
We bought Aris rails for our fence and some of them are soo badly twisted/bowed etc it’s hard to believe they actually sell them rather than cut up to smaller length etc…

March 17, 2022 at 9:03 pm #18289Yep, both makes are pressure treated and incised, as you say good timber was used years ago and good value, now just softwoods of various types, unless you are prepared to pay for likes of Cedar 😪

May 12, 2022 at 5:45 pm #18996Glad to say I finally got around to ordering my replacement fence posts from Wickes
After first inspection, glad to say they all seem to be very straight and of uniform shape, only two had minor damage, all knots etc, seems to clean and stable ( in place) and just a few tatty corners.
Fun weekend ahead I have
