Is infrared home heating any good?

Our gas boiler is long overdue an upgrade and looking at the various options (electric) was wondering how good infrared Home heating really is and given the cost per panel, is gas central heating still better value for money – especially when you take into account heating a hot water tank for showers etc. ?
