Interesting article; Recent security research identified a cloud-based vulnerability affecting some internet-connected Shark robot vacuums.

The issue was related to the way certain devices authenticated with Shark’s cloud service, rather than a weakness in users’ home Wi-Fi networks. In a proof-of-concept, the researcher demonstrated that, under specific circumstances, it could be possible to access information such as home maps, send commands to a robot, and on some models potentially access camera functions.

The attack was not considered easy to carry out, as it reportedly required physical access to a Shark vacuum in order to extract a security certificate before the cloud issue could be exploited.

Update: Following public disclosure, SharkNinja has confirmed that it has “completely addressed the identified vulnerability.” As the issue was with the company’s cloud infrastructure, users may not need to install a firmware update. However, it’s still good practice to keep your Shark app and vacuum firmware up to date whenever updates are available.
