So you have set up as follows:

In Advanced WAN: Dual WAN

Enable Dual WAN – On
Primary WAN – WAN
Secondary WAN – USB
Dual WAN mode – Fail Over

In Advanced WAN: Internet Connection

WAN Type – USB
Enable USB Modem – Yes
Location – Manual

Then enable Tethering on your USB Tethering on Phone after plugging in USB cable.

Nope even simpler – under WAN – type USB – and then android phone – so its the primary WAN and dual WAN is disabled. (for the DSL-N55u) on the RT-AC68u however then yes I tested it this way.. with the same result.

I realise you say, you had this working for the Sony, but if this does not work, then I assume the Router does not support this phone, maybe try an much older router firmware just for testing purposes ?

Tried the release firmware with same result – with android tethering there should be no support required – its vanilla android same as the pixel etc..

Was Sony cable and Nokia Cable the same, or are they different, maybe try a second Nokia USB cable ?

Yep 2 different cables for the nokia – and as the nokia and sony use different connection  (USB C and micro usb) they were not the same.

To test Nokia Tehering, can you tether your Nokia via a laptop etc. and does it work?

Yep works fine..

FYI -Does not support iPhone either (or at least did not last time I tested), so a workaround can be found here?

Noted – but I’m not buying additional hardware – its purely for a local network on a vehicle with the bonus of internet when the phone is plugged in – if I go that route i’ll just buy a usb modem

Thanks for your help :)
