I recently won this fairly cheap on eBay, I wanted to get another ASUS router having owned the N66U, AC68U variants. I see it does not have AI Mesh support but Merlin is available. Spec wise it does not look bad but is there anything else I should know? 🙂

I used to own one of these back in 2015, the unit is rather old nowadays, as it was first introduced in 2014, it uses a combination of Broadcom and Quantenna chipsets, the Quantenna chipsets are for wifi and did have real issues with Battery draining/stability etc.

Just looked thru the firmware’s for RT-AC87U and as you say, it does not mention AiMesh, so looks like ASUS are not prioritising this unit over similar Broadcom based units. (RT-AC68U)

It should work fine, just don’t expect miracles, the unit is supported by ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware, so you are in good hands.
