I recently won this fairly cheap on eBay, I wanted to get another ASUS router having owned the N66U, AC68U variants. I see it does not have AI Mesh support but Merlin is available. Spec wise it does not look bad but is there anything else I should know? :)

I used to own one of these back in 2015, the unit is rather old nowadays, as it was first introduced in 2014, it uses a combination of Broadcom and Quantenna chipsets, the Quantenna chipsets are for wifi and did have real issues with Battery draining/stability etc.
Just looked thru the firmware’s for RT-AC87U and as you say, it does not mention AiMesh, so looks like ASUS are not prioritising this unit over similar Broadcom based units. (RT-AC68U)
It should work fine, just don’t expect miracles, the unit is supported by ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware, so you are in good hands.

The RT-AC86U is a great little router, and has AiMesh etc, well worth the investment next time ;)

Enjoy ;-) – just keep in mind, try to buy a non Chinese version i.e. not from Gearbest etc, as these do have Language problems when used outside China, Forum Member @Grisu has ranted heavily about this on my old forum.

I saw them, if it’s cheaper it’s usually too good to be true. I bought an AC86U from scan.co.uk, first order I placed with them since 2006 lol.
