So I have been waiting a while (
) for a new update on the Netgear XR500 as the last update (Version 2.3.2.120) back in March is still the most recent release.
Alas reading on the Netduma Forums and community.netgear.com, lots of concerns around stability, QoS and disconnects. so as there is still no indication when any new firmware will be released, I thought I would share my set-up which does seems to last a few weeks before I decide to give the XR500 a reboot.
XR500 Stability settings:
Long story short, many months ago, I realised (as others have) DHCP and QOS was still an issue on the XR500 – (Version 2.3.2.120) so have tested a few options over the months and this seems to work for us at home.
Duma QoS:
- Congestion Control I have set to Always
- Congestion Control I have set to 90% f my Download Sych rate and 85% of my Upload synch rate, this helps with buffer bloat and I score A to A+ via DSLReports.com
- Disable QoS if at all possible or use change QoS priority from Device to Application, and this seems to work much better.

Under LAN Settings:
- Use Router as DHCP Server and set Starting IP Address to 50 or 100
- note:Then Address Reservation add all devices connected to XR500 router a manually assigned IP address lower than 50.
From my set-up, I have double NAT-ed our ASUS RT-AC86U wireless router as this can then handle all wifi clients and save issues with additional QoS – DHCP clients on the XR500. I have set a bandwidth limit of 50 Mbps on the ASUS RT-AC86U to limit bandwidth used by wifi clients etc.
Note: I have Disable Wireless radios on my XR500
