Long answer, so I plugged in my AutoLink ODB scanner to see if there was any codes or pending error codes etc, I also checked the EGR valve voltage etc. when car engine was revving and all was correct.

I then noticed that the oil level on the dipstick was about 5mm over the max level which was interesting.

I then smelt the oil on the dipstick and there was a feint diesel odour which means that diesel fuel is likely finding its way into the engine sump.

Water coolant level was correct and had not changed.

So given the early Fiat 500’s has a poor Diesel Particulate Filter regen system (really poor) and often does not complete due to distance traveled from student house to UNI,. It seemed logical that due to repeated failed DPF regens, this has caused diesel fuel to enter the engine sump and degrade engine oil quality.

As the Flashing Change Engine Oil Light was blinking and the dash scrolling message was also saying ‘Change Engine Oil’ seemed logical to change the oil and filter promptly.

Fiats  , but they do look good
