So my Daughter arrived home from UNI on Friday for a long weekend and happened to mention that her Fiat, which is the 2009 Fiat 500 1.3 Diesel had a Flashing Engine Oil Light on the dash and also a scrolling message saying ‘Change Engine Oil’  the other day.

So no time to check into our normal garage I decided to change the oil and filter myself as a quick fix before the car is needed on Monday.

I love using the Castrol Magnatec brand and opted for the 5-30w C2 spec oil.

Now the reason for this thread is that for Fiats () there are so many different suggestions online to reset the Oil check Light/Service light that didn’t work for this Fiat 500, so I thought I would detail what worked for myself on our (my daughters) 2009 Fiat 500 Multijet, as per below…

    Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Diesel Flashing Engine Oil Light Reset Procedure;

    * Firstly, turn on the ignition key to first position (do not start engine),
    * Press the accelerator pedal and keep it depressed.
    * Then press the brake pedal 7 times whilst still holding the accelerator pedal in position.
    * Then keep pressing the accelerator pedal for a further 60 seconds.
    * Finally, release the accelerator pedal and turn off the ignition and wait for a further 60 seconds with ignition still off.

Turn on the ignition and start the engine, Hopefully the flashing Engine Oil Light is no longer on.

Note: I did read on one forum (I forget which) that just resetting the service light could impact the ‘oil degradation counter’ luckily the car is annually serviced at a local garage and as we only have 3 months before next annual service is due, I am not going to worry unduly about the possibility.

Why do you change it now and not just ignore it till next stop in the garage in 3 months?

Long answer, so I plugged in my AutoLink ODB scanner to see if there was any codes or pending error codes etc, I also checked the EGR valve voltage etc. when car engine was revving and all was correct.

I then noticed that the oil level on the dipstick was about 5mm over the max level which was interesting.

I then smelt the oil on the dipstick and there was a feint diesel odour which means that diesel fuel is likely finding its way into the engine sump.

Water coolant level was correct and had not changed.

So given the early Fiat 500’s has a poor Diesel Particulate Filter regen system (really poor) and often does not complete due to distance traveled from student house to UNI,. It seemed logical that due to repeated failed DPF regens, this has caused diesel fuel to enter the engine sump and degrade engine oil quality.

As the Flashing Change Engine Oil Light was blinking and the dash scrolling message was also saying ‘Change Engine Oil’ seemed logical to change the oil and filter promptly.

Fiats  , but they do look good

Great looking car the Fiat 500 is for my daughter, but the fiats can be high maintenance

We have some funny german explanations for FIAT (like FORD=fix or repair daily).

    For Italians Adequate Technique
    Failure In Italian Automotive
Fehler in allen Teilen = failure in all parts
Fehler ist aber teuer = but failure are expensive
Fahr immer am Tag = drive always with daylight (because at night service stations are closed)

Main problems we saw in the past that their cars are built for warm mediterranean (italian) climate and not for wet and cold weather with strong winters in the alps.
