Sorry to say but give up thinking there could ever be a Merlin-version for DSL-AC88U. GNUton just had a look into the firmware and no chance: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/openwrt-custom-firmware-for-asus-dsl-routers.56478/ And worse – for him its more a development firmware not able to be compiled from GPL.
Such a shame, the DSL-AC88U could really do with GNUton work of combining RMerlin based Firmware options on the DSL-AC88U,
