I am still looking and thought to add some context incase others read this thread from the UK looking for a better understanding of UK’s ONT (Optical Network Terminal).

In the UK,  the ONT has to be matched with the OLT (Optical Line Terminal – head end) in the Exchange and there are different vendors used in the UK Nokia,Huawei and Adtran I believe. (hardware)

Then there is the standards (GPON, XGSPON) used in the UK. The standards allow cross vendor solutions, but this is challenging and expensive.

If an ONT is swapped out for another (same hardware manufacturer) it won’t work unless it’s configured on the OLT. In a typical PON network all connections from the same fibre splitter receive all the same light. The data is encrypted on the fibre and addressed specifically to each ONT, so each user can only see their own traffic. If you change the ONT, the address won’t be correct and you won’t see any data.

To add to this I believe at least for UK, ONT’s on the network has its serial number registered against the circuit. If you buy your own ONT and plug it in, it won’t authenticate.

This sound very familiar to what forum member @Grisu described whom is based in Austria, now I just need to understand if Germany telecoms / fibre network also deploys a similar solution.

(Note: happy to be corrected as some of this information maybe incorrect.)
