@Lax – Ok, so I have received feedback from ASUS and as you thought, Ethernet AiMesh backhaul for DSL-AC68U (RE) Node option does not work (not supported).
The latest Beta (DSL-AC68U_9.0.0.4_384_81451-g2429703.trx.zip) from ASUS does support AiMesh Ethernet Backhaul (CAP) Primary, but not for (RE) Node.
I also asked if they plan to allow the DSL-AC68U to support Ethernet backhaul for (RE) Node at some point in the future and they have no plans currently.
