Android is preparing to expand its nearby wireless file-sharing feature to a wider range of phones, bringing a more seamless experience similar to what Apple users have long enjoyed with AirDrop.
The system is built on Android’s Quick Share technology, which allows phones to send photos, videos, and documents directly to nearby devices using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The key improvement is broader compatibility, including smoother transfers between Android devices and Apple hardware such as iPhones and Macs.
Until now, this cross-platform sharing capability has been limited to a small number of devices, but Google has indicated that support will gradually roll out to more Android manufacturers throughout 2026. The update is expected to arrive through system updates or Google Play services rather than requiring new hardware.
Why this matters
Makes sharing files easier between Android and Apple users
Works locally without relying on cloud services or mobile data
Uses encrypted, device-to-device connections
Reduces the need for third-party file-sharing apps
If widely adopted, this could significantly reduce friction when sharing files between different mobile ecosystems — something users have long requested.
