Hello, I have a question about the Asus AC 88 router, I want to install Nord VPN on it via open vpi, I connect to it, e.g. Czech Republic, but it simply gives an encrypted IP on the laptop, not on the router, there is an old IP on the router that is not encrypted, so it gives VPN not in router. So when the IP is encrypted in the router, in the VPN router, the client gives a log, password, loads the server server, saves and does not want to surprise anyone. Who can help me?

Welcome, Can I check which ASUS AC 88 model router you have ?

Is it the DSL-AC88U or RT-AC88U

I thought so, alas the DSL-AC88U never worked well with VPN and has not been supported by ASUS since 2018.

ASUS did release a security update in 2021, but that is just a contractual commitment they had with the manufacturer of the DSL-AC88U.

I very much doubt any modern VPN will work with your DSL-AC88U but worth a look at below instructions incase this helps ?

I would replace DSL-AC88U router, ASUS routers generally work well with VPN’s especially if they are using ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware.

    On Patryk Krupnik said

what router do you recommend for vpn nord

Is it a combined Modem/Router or a separate router that you would consider ?

ASUS DSL-AX82U is good modem router

    or

    ASUS RT-AX58U

    ASUS RT-AX86U

Both above are good reliable units and broadcom CPU, but you will need a modem also with an ASUS RT series router.

There are ASUS router also which have a better CPU and worse CPU’s, just depends on what you wish to purchase and your budget etc.

If you are only interested in NordVPN, then maybe worth looking at raspberry pi alternatives etc.

The ASUS DSL-AX82U is a good option and the stock firmware from an VPN perspective should give you what you are looking for.

Alternatively, there is an ASUS supported (unofficially) firmware called @GNUton firmware which uses ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware and will be a great option as this offers extra support for VPN’s etc.

I appreciate maybe just a language barrier but just need to understand what you mean by ‘ip encrypted on the router‘ as a VPN usually hides an IP address and the data that is transferred is encrypted etc.

Did you mean VPN IP address is hidden on Router ?

That makes more sense and I believe the ASUS DSL-AX82U will be a good choice

Why dont you use your DSL-AC88U as modem only in bridge mode and buy a cheaper RT-AX.. router which gets the public IP and can be configured as you like?

Nice idea, but from what I remember the DSL-AC88U does not support VLAN ID’s which is usually performed by the modem part of the DSL-AC88U.

The DSL-AC88U would only support Pure Bridge with no VLAN ID tags.

Then it would be a mostly useless function and I cant imagine that this wont be implemented in SU-mode on WAN-side. You have to set it in TV settings.
I think I tested this config when I used Asus router and modems years ago but cant say for sure.

Another option would be using provider modem in SU-mode (if available) and sell DSL-AC88U for an RT-AX.

    Not a problem

Usually for NordVPN, no additional ports are required to be open, what problem do you think you have ?

Is the problem with 1194 UDP and 443 TCP ports ?

If you want to OPEN ports for your ASUS DSL-AC82U go to ..

ADVANCED Settings > WAN > Virtual Server and Enable Port Forwarding

Then under Famous Server List select OPEN VPN and choose IP you need etc ?

Or you can add your Port Forwarding rules manual (see below video – English Language)

Yes, DSL-AX82U has A dedicated WAN port so can act like a normal router that can handle Full Fibre connection supplied by an ONT point

The DSL-AX82U supports DSL, WAN (Router, no modem), Access Point (AP) and AI Mesh modes of operation I believe.

For your NordVPN, if you are using Full Fibre connection (not DSL) best to set this on your main router (DSL-AX82U) and use the DSL-AX82U as a router only (WAN Port) and configure the NordVPN to run on the DSL-AX82U, make sure the clients (internet connected devices) use the DSL-AX82U if they want to benefit from the VPN
