Recent ASUS router listings have raised eyebrows by mentioning that “AFC service is included for the first four years, with additional charges thereafter.” While this sounds concerning, it’s important to understand that AFC (Automated Frequency Coordination) does not apply in the UK.
AFC is a regulatory system used in the United States and Canada to allow higher-power use of the 6 GHz Wi-Fi band. It relies on a cloud database to prevent interference with licensed services. In contrast, UK regulations set by Ofcom only permit low-power indoor use of 6 GHz Wi-Fi, and AFC is not required or used.
For UK users, this means:
No AFC service is active
No future AFC subscription fees
No impact on current or future Wi-Fi performance
The AFC wording seen on some global product pages is aimed at North American markets only. UK owners of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers can safely ignore it — there’s no hidden charge, no expiry, and no cloud dependency involved.
In short, while AFC may shape how 6 GHz Wi-Fi evolves overseas, it has no effect on UK users today.
Note:
Which ASUS Routers Currently Support AFC
As of now, ASUS’s official documentation lists the following models with AFC support in the U.S. market:
ROG Strix GS‑BE18000 — the first ASUS router with AFC enabled via firmware, intended for U.S. standard‑power 6 GHz operation.
ROG Rapture GT‑BE19000AI — also supported per ASUS’s AFC support list, making it the second model where AFC can be enabled on compatible firmware.
In a completely sane world, madness is the only freedom (J.G.Ballard).
