So had the pleasure of setting up iPhone USB Tethering on my ASUS DSL-AX82U and thought I would create a guide to help others as not much information out there currently.
ASUS router (AX) firmwares are starting to support iPhone USB Tethering (Android is supported already) and below are the basic steps I used to create an mobile access point using my iPhone and ASUS DSL-AX82U.
—–
Note: My iPhone 11 Pro was running iOS 16.6.1 and I used an approved USB-A to lightning cable.
Note 2: I configured my DSL-AX82U to only use USB as its connection to the internet
Note 3: Firmware Version used – DSL-AX82U_3.0.0.4_388_23756
—–
Step 1:
From the ASUS UI, go to WAN > DUAL WAN and disable the DUAL WAN option and then underneath I set the PRIMARY WAN to USB.
Then click Apply
Step 2:
Then go to WAN > Internet Connection and select ENABLE USB MODE and selected ON, I left the rest of the settings on that page as default.
Then click Apply
Step 3:
Then from my iPhone, I enabled PERSONNEL HOTSPOT and then plugged the USB-A cable into the rear of the ASUS Router and plugged in the lightning cable connection into my iPhone, I was presented on the iPhone screen with the option to TRUST THIS COMPUTER, which I selected TRUST and then entered my iPhone passcode.
Then after around a 30 second wait, the Internet LED on the ASUS DSL-AX82U lighted up and I was able to connect my laptop to the ASUS routers wifi and surf the internet.
I then logged back into the ASUS router, on the main screen you can see that my iPhone is identified under the USB 3.0 Tab.
FYI; I am in a poor 4G area but Internet speeds was around 40Mbps download and 6Mbps upload when I tested from my Laptop.

November 8, 2023 at 11:33 am #27935Another one of ASUS little gems that they do not over publicise and very little details online.
A Drop down box for differentiation between ANDROID / iPhone would be perfect but thank goodness for forums that explain and test these gems

November 8, 2023 at 8:34 pm #27941Happy to confirm that I have tested iPhone USB Tethering with an iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 17.1.1 and this also worked as expected as a tethered device to an ASUS Router

December 6, 2023 at 7:58 pm #28358I found this info very useful. The only thing missing is the firmware versions that support this new feature. For this, go to support page https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1050074/

I have such a niche use case. My local broadband sucks so I have to use my iPhone as a hotspot, but I recently got a Meta Quest Pro and wanted to use Steam Link VR for it, which requires the headset and PC to be on a fast, 5ghz WIFI network. I wanted to find a way to buy a router and use an iPhone as my WAN connection for it, and I saw the ASUS page on WAN backup, which DIDN’T include a list of supported routers. I managed to find a few models which clearly stated they supported it, but they were super high end expensive ROG models.
Found this exact router for sale locally for very cheap, and then just so happened to find this forum post explaining that it’s possible to do exactly what I’m aiming to do. Thank you.
