Hi all,
Does anyone know if can add a IP helper on rt-ax86U?
Trying to get PXE boot to work but its failing and I’ve seen that the alternative of setting DHCP options is no longer recommended and to use IP helpers instead but not sure if/how to setup on rt-ax86U.
Thanks
Kev

July 30, 2022 at 9:07 pm #20409In general terms, are you looking to set up a DHCP relay via LAN (multiple VLAN’s) ? i.e Β routers use IP helper addresses to forward broadcasts to another server or router on another network via LAN.
Most (some) people use Raspberry Pie or simular (Routing Switch – Β DD-WRT ) for this sort of procedure.
A little more detail about what you are trying to achieve may assist guidance givenΒ Β

July 31, 2022 at 7:57 am #20410For reference. What is IP Helper ?
What is the difference between dhcp and IP helper-address ?
Using the IP helper-address command sets up a DHCP relay. DHCP only works on the LAN to which it is connected because it uses broadcast, which cannot cross a router. To remedy that situation, DHCP relay was created. It gives DHCP an option so that a router intercepts the DHCP client’s broadcast request, creates a unicast request to the DHCP server on a different LAN, and the DHCP server can give a unicast response to the router based on the DHCP option, that then passes on the DHCP response to the requesting DHCP client.
The key piece of this is that the Router sending the DHCP request on behalf of the client will unicast the request with a source address from the address space the client is in (the interface the relay/helper-address is configured on). This is ensures the DHCP server offers an IP from the correct scope.
IP Helper (I believe) was/is a Cisco based service.

July 31, 2022 at 10:44 am #20411Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I’m basically setting up a deployment server so I can PXE boot and image a virtual machine or physical machine.
I thought i had set it all up ready BUT when using a virtual machine it does EFI network and then gets a IP address and then waits for a bit and then returns me to the menu options, it doesn’t seem to locate the deployment server.
I have 2 domains, I’ve separated them by placing them under different network adapters in Virtual machine.Β If using E1000 NIC on VM, it doesn’t get a IP address, by selecting VXNET3, it gets a Ip address but still no progress.
Upon looking some people set setup DHCP 66/67 and others said no, that’s old and deprecated, use IP helpers so hence started looking at IP helpers but maybe I’ll try the DHCP options and see if that helps.
Thanks
Kev

Options 66 and 67 is meant for use by PXE TFTP (pixie) etc. Β and ideal for what you need I believe,
Yes old school and simple but as you are not commercial, worth exploring π

July 31, 2022 at 4:30 pm #20413Yes, for some reason it still wont work, I had it working on a old setup but now it wont work.
Will have to take a look some time and see if i can figure out why it wont work now.
I’ve basically setup my servers in 192.168.2.0 network and i’ve assigned a non-live NIC so i can access via the Vmware Console and boot up each machine but when i try to PXE boot, just says ipv4. and then it doesn’t get an address and eventually goes back to the menu.
Not sure why it wont work as its effectively a self contained network as it has no internet access at all.
Thanks
Kev
