Hi all, I purchased a Tuf Gaming AX5400 and a DSL N-16 to replace a BT Winfinity Speed hub 2. (UK)
I aim to use (hopefully with your help) the N16 as the modem and ax5400 as the router – does that seem right thing to do?
Anyway I can’t get the two to work together. I’m guessing it has to do with vlan. I can’t find a guide and Asus are no help at the mo.
Also my speed before was 80Mbps but is now 65. Do I need to alter settings in the N16? I can see right page – any guide for this?
So do I need to put n16 in bridge mode? Then what?
For info I have cable from adsl filter to N16.
Lan cable from port 1 on N16 to wan port on ax5400. Xbox in gaming port. When done, would I disable wireless on N16 or does bridge mode do that?
Cheers for reading and……

April 9, 2022 at 8:35 pm #18633Welcome, are you using a BT VDSL ( FTTC) broadband service ?
If so, then the DSL-n16 does not support Bridge mode but you can use ‘Enable PPPoE Relay’ so the DSL-N16 passes all the PPPoE traffic straight thru to the Router.
Alas, the DSl-N16 uses a MediaTeK DSL chipset, which is not good, Broadcom or Lantiq (Intel) DSL chipset are far superior and the DrayTeK Vigor 130 is a good alternative modem to consider ?
Most likely your DSL sync rate (speed) has dropped from 80Mbps but is now 65 is because every time you reboot the DSL-N16, this will cause your synch rate (speed) to reduce as the line is considered unstable (due to rebooting DSL-N16) and the synch rate reduces to provide better stability.

April 9, 2022 at 11:20 pm #18636Hi and thanks.
Yes the line is vdsl2.
There is an option to put it in bridge mode. Do I not use this and something else?
Draytec….oh I used to have one of there modems at the start of internet. It was highly rated. That one you mention costs near £100. I wasn’t intended on using any features of the modem…maybe I’ve got this wrong…

April 9, 2022 at 11:44 pm #18637Hi, actually UK sentinel I can see a post by you about bridge mode.
Re vlan Id.
What do I do at the ax5400 software?

April 10, 2022 at 1:19 am #18638If you mean the below link, I maybe wrong, but I think that option changed over time for Bridge mode ? give it a go and let us know ?
The if above works, just add your BT broadband details to the ASUS as per below image.

April 10, 2022 at 7:18 am #18642I forgot to say, if you are using BT broadband service then BT (OpenReach) require (not Enforce) that the Modem you use is BT SIN 498 MCT approved, otherwise if any Broadband faults occur etc, they could charge you to fix problem.
DrayTeK Modems are to this standard as are others

April 10, 2022 at 3:59 pm #18656Hi, yes that is the link. Feel so close but my (lack of) expertise is letting me down.
Under tab internet connection is wan transfer mode. Choice of ADSL wan ATM, VDSL wan ptm (selected) and ethernet wan.
Service unit service 1 is selected 1-8 options
Enable yes is selected
Then basic config wan connection type options are auto IP, static IP, pppoe, bridge. Bridge selected. Then Lan 1 is selected. No option for wan port. Option is Lan 1-4.
Then 802.1q
Enable yes selected.
Vlan I’d is 101
802.1p is 0.
I’ve then gone to Lan, IPTV.
Wan type is vdsl wan (ptm)
Basic config enable multicast routing as disable selected.U
DP proxy is 0
Remove vlan tag from wan I’ve put as enabled

April 10, 2022 at 4:22 pm #18660Hey it appears to be working. Xbox (in gaming port) has open NAT. Wired (into ax5400) devices now have internet.
I’ve got this phone connected via ax5400 WiFi.
Thanks re original post!!!!
So now I just have to change settings with DSL like turn WiFi off? Re slower max download – do I adjust settings or wait?
I’m sat next to exchange so my figures were best possible before.

April 10, 2022 at 5:05 pm #18661Great news, glad to see the DSL-N16 still supports ‘Bridge Mode’
If the DSL-N16 is in bridge mode, then just turn off DSL-N16 wifi and wait a week to see if Synch rate / speed improves etc, as its the DLM that decided best speed etc.
Key to ensuring DLM improves DSL line synch / speed is to not keep rebooting modem.

May 31, 2022 at 11:23 pm #19140Hi, ok to post on old thread? It’s about this.
I used to get 80Mbps with smarthub 2 but can’t get anything more than 55Mbps.
I’ve left it for weeks and nothing changes.
Presume I only mess with N16 but what exactly?
Note have turned QoS to do test.
Thanks for peaking in.
